The practical difference
Headlamp is an official Kubernetes sub-project with desktop and in-cluster delivery, RBAC-aware controls, application-oriented Projects, and a substantial plugin system. Fortem deliberately covers a smaller surface and starts from a different operational question.

Choose Fortem when
- You prefer an immediately opinionated environment table over constructing project groupings.
- Requests, usage, workload readiness, events, logs, and routing should share one investigation path.
- A single local server process is preferable to a desktop shell or cluster deployment.
- You want management disabled at the backend unless explicitly enabled at startup.
Choose Headlamp when
- Open-source licensing and an established community are requirements today.
- You need desktop and in-cluster deployment choices.
- Projects spanning namespaces or clusters match your application model better.
- You plan to build plugins, custom pages, integrations, or branded experiences.
What this comparison does not claim
Headlamp Projects already provide an application-focused view across namespaces and clusters.
Fortem is less extensible and less mature; it is intentionally a focused local product.
Headlamp can also run locally without an in-cluster installation, so that property is not unique to Fortem.

The Fortem demo uses synthetic Kubernetes data and requires no cluster credentials. Free investigates one selected context; Pro adds a local fleet summary for up to 10 contexts; Teams is the assisted path for shared organizational requirements.
Public binaries and checksums are available. Code signing and notarization are not yet included.
